Services Manager does not control Service? My colleague and I are in the process of repackaging a Windows application. This application, when installed using the native installation, creates a Windows service. Our problem is, upon repackaging the application, the service seems to be created (as it a appears in Services in Administrative Tools) but we are unable to manipulate (i.e. Start/Stop) the service from the Services screen. We instead get an error : Could not start (Program Name) service on Local Computer: Error 1053: This service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. In services.msc my UPnP and SSDP services will not start. Anyone know how I can repair or reinstall these? Im using windows xp home. My computer crashed a week ago and I used the repair console to replace a corrupted file in the system32 folder. since then my computer does not recognize my printer or audio devices. I have traced this down to a few services that are not starting. UPnP, SSDP, Windows Firewall/ICS and a few others will not start, even manually. Created a Windows Service app, but it won't show in the Services listing? I am creating a Windows Service in Visual Studio 2003, C#, .NET version 1.1. The application compiles OK, but when I try to install it on my Windows XP PC to test it, the new service does not display in the listing of available services (Admin Tools> Services). I have tried refreshing the list and rebooting my PC. I have installed the service with both the Installutil command and by creating a setup project. Both install approaches ran fine, gave no errors, and said the service was installed. It even shows up under the Add and Remove Programs listing... just not in the Services listing. Anybody encountered this before and know how to fix it?

Accessing Social Services Records - UK only? I have been trying for several years to access records that Social Services hold on me from the time that I was in care during the 1970s and 80s. I started making a concerted effort starting last February to access the records under the Data Protection Act and Social Services were supposed to make the records available within 40 days, but this has now been going on for a year and I am still waiting. I have written to the Borough Solicitor, the Information Commissioner and my MP, but I have yet to receive replies apart from one from the Borough Solicitor saying that they're looking into it. I need the records urgently as the police need to have access to them now as well. What do I have to do to force Social Services to make them available? I can't afford a solicitor. Can I make a court application by myself? How would I go about this? Please help if you can as this is now urgent. Please no clever or nasty comments as this is important to me. I did mention the Freedom of Information Act, but they're still ignoring me.
