2. well thicker tape machines are used to measure time and velocity of a certain object, the thicker would mark dots on the tape or piece of paper and you could measure speed by measuring the time something took to travel a certain distance and measuring the number of dots in a certain length in the tape . . i used those in physics thats why hope dat answers ur question

3. Good question!!
From ABOUT.COM
In 1867, Mr. Edward A. Calahan of the American Telegraph Company invented the first stock telegraph printing instrument. It was Calahan's idea that stock prices could be provided through some form of telegraphy. The distinct sound of the telegraph printing instrument eventually earned it the name of the stock ticker.

Thomas Edison's first successful invention was an improved stock ticker called the "Universal Stock Printer".

4. There's a short article at Wikipedia on the subject, but it doesn't say much more than they were sent by an anlog signal trasnmitted on a wire and printed at the other end. The signal was generated by a typewriter-like device and worked on a speed of about 1 character per second.

I have a feeling that the signal was, in fact, morse code. I vaguely recall reading once that the earliest code operaters were people who were able to interpret the clicks made by the machines more quickly than they could be read off the tape.

I could be wrong.
