Referring to the stock exchange can you sell stock at any stock exchange?

Referring to the stock exchange if stock is registered at a particular stock exchange for example RBS shares are registered at the London stock exchange can they be brought or sold at another stock exchange for example the New York stock exchange or only the stock exchange where they are registered.

1. Some are yes

You can get ADR's, American depository receipts to trade US stocks in Germany for example, mainly the larger companieS, OR SOME UK/Euro companies on NYSE

see http://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE%3ARBS

2. No, unless it has a dual register. The big problem is the settlement (delivery of stock). You cannot sell RBS (registered in London) on the NY stock exchange. RBS quite possibly have ADRs which can be sold in US but not London. With an ADR an investment bank buys shares in London and issues the equivalent ADR against them to trade in US. There are usually multiple shares in each ADR (like 10shares=1 ADR). A lot of shares are now held as CDI (Crest Depository Interests) which I think can be traded across exchanges. Crest is an international clearing system so if you can deal Crest then you are OK.
