AFP Miliband to urge US to stand firm on free trade: report -
3 days ago

LONDON (AFP) — {British Labour} Foreign Secretary David Miliband

"American internationalism has been a feature of all periods of global progress," he told the business daily before heading to the United States where he will meet advisers to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, among others.

"It's absolutely clear that the world needs an America that's engaged with the global trading system in a very fundamental, very committed way. The problem is not too much trade, the problem is too little trade.

"That is our position as a British government, and it will be articulated clearly and consistently."

NAFTA, created under Bill Clinton in 1994, created the largest trading bloc in the world by eliminating import tariffs on goods circulating among partners Canada, the United States and Mexico.

The foreign secretary's stance comes after criticisms from Canada and the EU's trade commissioner Peter Mandelson, who attacked US presidential hopefuls -- but not by name -- for appearing to want to disengage from globalisation.

"It's a mirage and they know it and it's very irresponsible, in my view, to pretend to people that we can disengage from international trade, we can create barriers around our economy and be surprised when people retaliate by doing the same," he told BBC television earlier this month.

"Where's that going to lead us? It's going to lead us into a vicious spiral of 'beggar thy neighbour' policies which will take us decades back in terms of trade growth and rising living standards that we've seen in the world."

Public Comments

1. Nope, cause he is not going to win in November.

2. Not only the loss of our allies , but the loss of our nation as well.

3. If you consider protecting our way of life, defending American jobs and taking care of our own first...is protectionism then we don't have a chance in life, we are a lost Nation. We don't have any future because if we don't take care of our own, no body is going to do it. Every country is doing it why not the USA.?? Global trading, NAFTA, etc. is hurting our American citizens and our country, is unfair. We are turning from a manufacture and self support nation into a consumerist society... and is not good because as a Nation we cannot depend on other countries to defend us, we will become weak...a weak America is not good for the world.

4. No, as they have opined they need us to be "engaged in a global trading system".

There is a difference between Globalization and having trading partners in a global trading system.

We DO NOT need a one world global government that the Europeans are pushing for in European Union. We need a very strong sovereign national presence with strong border protections.

The Americas Global Sector that they speak of does not have the freedoms and liberty that we are used to having and enjoying.

If you are not alarmed, read "The Report of the United Nations Committee on Global Governance"; chaired in part by Mikhail Gorbachev. It eliminates the sovereign United States and makes us part of a global governing body that is not democratic in practice. The greatest experiment in personal liberty and freedom is doomed by these globalists’ recommendations. Obama is right to resist their call for inclusion of the United States. The President has the responsibility of protecting us from all enemies foreign and domestic, globalists are enemies foreign and domestic.

Be ware globalists, trans-nationalists, non-government internationalists, multi-nationalists and all others that want a one-world answer to American Affairs of Economy and Sovereignty.

5. Protectionism is actually a misnomer. When you close yourself off from international trade like that, you dont' end up "protecting" your country, you end up impoverishing it. It may protect select special interest groups but the country as a whole gets poorer and worse still, more resources will be wasted on propping up unprofitable industries that will cause more pain to pull apart later on down the road - either that or they will continue to bleed the economy. The fact is the cost of protectionism is spread over the entire economy so it's less noticeable overall, though the cost is greater than the *gain* or non-gain.

So the bigger problem is not that Obama's protectionism would cause the loss of our European/Canadian/British friends, (though that too is a problem) but that it would drag down the American economy further in the long run.
