How much money do you need to start day trading?

I have heard that you need upwards of $2k to start day trading and I need to know if thats true or not. I know that certain brokers require a minimum amount but is it possible to day trade without a broker?

Public Comments

1. You need at least $25,000 dollars by U.S. regulations. You have to use a broker. See the link below for more specific information.

2. To be considered a true pattern day trader, you must have $25,000 minimum equity, not a balance of $25,000 but equity.

You can day trade, for $2,000, as long as you do not trade the same security. However, you will have to trade either cheap stocks or options since you can gain more leverage. With low priced stocks comes greater risk and options require more knowledge.

All brokers require minimum amounts to open accounts, such requirements vary from $200 to $1000.

No you can not trade without a brokerage firm, since individuals do not have access to the markets, and can not clear trades.

Judging by your questions, you are not ready to trade let alone day trade. It would be in your best interest to do more studying, the grass always look greener. Before you spend $.01 either as investing or trading, you should know what your are doing, why you are doing it and how to do it.
