What is network marketing and how does it work?

I've seen a few people on the internet talking about how well they are doing with network marketing and how much money they are making, could someone please help me to understand what network marketing is, whether or not it is worth while doing nd if a full time business could be run doing it, it seems like a good investment but i don't like to trust everything i see on the net.
