Would you consider the Ipad a mass marketed or a niche marketed item?

Just wondering, doing some marketing research for my class.

1. I think its a mass marketed item, although ipad only produced by apple which mean no or least competitor with the same quality product. The only problem are merchants or distributors around the world that have to compete especially in the internet. Because so many merchant that sell this product and it's get high demand in the market, it can be seen from Google hot trend or keyword research tool. So merchants need better preparation and strategy to sell their product.
